Haystacks

Painting/ Drawing

2006

Simple series of drawings celebrating harvest season at the mill. My research looked at haystacks as ethnographic forms, reflecting various cultures and time periods in the shape and texture. This series documented the Ukrainian method we practiced with our workers at that time, before we had a barn to store the hay under a roof. This technique of high stacking creates a ‘crust’ on the haystack that protects the hay inside all winter, a practice used throughout the Slavic lands.
